One of Ireland's leading historians, Thomas Sheridan, has urged Conor McGregor to go to the Hill of Tara and reclaim the Crown of Ireland.

Speaking on The Scholar Gypsies podcast, Mr Sheridan said the Irish political establishment are rattled by the MMA star's recent interview with US journalist, Tucker Carlson..

"The mythological thing. To Conor's absolute credit, he is targeting this unresolved Gaelic soul beneath the surface," Mr Sheridan said.

"That is a very powerful archetype, that is a weapon that should be used. It doesn't get enough credit for lots of reasons, but it's there.

"James Joyce spoke about trying to bring to consciousness the 'unspoken conscious of his race,' well I think people like Conor are trying to do that. I am trying to do that."

The writer offered some guidance as to what he believes the Crumlin fighter should do next.

"If I was advising Conor McGregor right now, I would say 'screw the Presidential campaign, stay in the race, but act like you are already President.

"How about an event where you go to Tara, and you swear an oath to the land of Ireland, like the High Kings did.

"That's theatrical, but my God, that stuff works, theatre works and the people that will slag it off will slag it off even if you won the election.

"Have the audacity to go to Tara and swear like the old High Kings an oath, like before the Gaelic laws were demolished, to the land of Eire, the land of Ireland.

"Wow, that would be something, to be the de facto King of Ireland. People might say 'oh that is corny' but yeah, bring it on because it will irritate the living shite out of the establishment.

"Irritate them and annoy them and freak them out. And they will continue to make mistakes. What are they going to turn around and say?

"'Oh the old Kings of Ireland were eejits like Conor McGregor?' You are putting them in a position they can't get out of. They can't get out of it.

"If they insult that event, they are insulting the soul of the Gaelic people. You constantly play them into corners, with this stuff. And they can't pull their way out of it."

The historian referenced a sacred, ancient Irish text and how it may relate to contemporary times.

"The classic one is the 'Book of Invasions.' That is basically a guide book that says "If you come to Ireland and try to take over we will fucking kill you." That is what the 'Book of Invasions' is and they try to hide that, our most sacred mythological text.

"They don't want anyone to know about that. In the mythology when the tax collectors came, they sent their heads back, these are powerful things.

"They are there. He is a larger than life hero in MMA, so, Conor, I say 'become Fionn Mac Cumhaill, become Cu Chulainn in a psychic and living sense,' and irritate the living shit out of the establishment.

"Please do it, you have our full support and be as outrageous and as outlandish about it as you want."

As regard the Freemason Hall being the location where the interview with Tucker Carlson took place, Mr Sheridan said: "I place little significance on it in one aspect and possibly a lot in another aspect. Not in a cloak and dagger kind of thing.

"These kinds of halls are very commonly rented in the US and it was an American production company that rented it.

"In every town in the States, these kind of halls are rented for kinds of things like this. It is how they make money. Freemasonry is dying in Ireland.

"Lodges are closing down. I don't get a sense of power off them now.

"That is the innocent side. The other side is that it was a clever send up of sorts, designed to create hysteria for ratings.

"Throw a spanner in the works for exposure. And it is now trending on X. I don't think it was nefarious. We are dealing with show business, Tucker is show business. These people from America are clever with media. Maximum exposure. "

Journalist John Waters added: "Conor has gone straight to the punchline. We need to face the fact that we have been living off dirty money and we don't want the corporations here in Ireland.

"They have destroyed our country and we want them out.

"'We go with God', Conor had a lot of good lines. Somebody knows what is happening and has the courage to go out and say it.

"He is Ireland's secret weapon. He could be the salvation of Ireland. Somebody who comes from the salt of the earth of Irish life and is telling the world 'We are in big trouble.''

"We are in a crowded theatre and there is a fire. And McGregor is shouting 'fire!fire!fire!Come quickly."

"The Paschals and Micheal's and Harris's are going to be deeply uneasy. Their dirty tricks are silent because they don't know the effect of this.

"This is going to be good. Young people will be moved by how he speaks, his real, palpable anger.

"The Irish people don't know they are living in a country that is being changed beyond all recognition. They are demolishing Ireland and putting something in its place that we don't know the name. This is plantation and anyone who says otherwise is not paying attention. There is nothing in Irish history to match this for horror.

"Ireland is in a terminal condition. That is not hyperbole. We all know that is understating it because it is far, far worse. The statistics are off the wall.

"The creeps that are in Government. We could never have imagines this."

Mr Sheridan added: "The country is jam packed with people."
