Another strange case of missing time, incidents of which were discussed in Sidestream News' previous articles, were reported to us from the Stillorgan area of south Dublin. Alan Redmond left his apartment with his dog, ‘Ralph’, to go for a walk. While walking with his pet in a field adjacent to a housing estate, Ralph suddenly began to bark loudly, for no apparent reason. It was then that Redmond noticed a large, green, cylindrical object floating silently in the sky. It was moving south,

towards the Dublin-Wicklow Mountains.

The next thing he could remember was that he was coming to his senses while lying face down in a wooded area, approximately one kilometre away from where he had observed the unidentified flying object. His dog lay unconscious beside him. What had befallen them during the period between his observation, and his regaining consciousness so far away from that location? This remains a troubling mystery to Redmond, the experience of which has left a lasting impression on his mind.

Certainly, a pre-existing scepticism concerning UFOs and the realm of the paranormal

has since evaporated. In Part One of Abductions and Altered States we mentioned the concept of advanced alien communication on an altered level of consciousness. We know that human

beings possess extrasensory abilities, and that most, if not all abductees develop psychic abilities to some extent. So let us now explore further altered states, hypnosis, and the unconscious mind.

A clinical definition of hypnosis is that it is an altered state of relaxed awareness in which the unconscious mind can accept a suggestion, even though it is at variance with what it previously believed. When a person is in hypnosis or trance, which is an altered state, their attention is focused inwards and they are more open to suggestion.

In normal circumstances, the conscious mind vets all incoming information. The conscious mind is the critic, and no information is allowed through to the library of the unconscious mind unless it goes through the scrutiny of the conscious mind. This process allows for only factual data, as best as can be discerned by the critic, to enter the vast storehouse of the unconscious mind.

If someone were to say to you that the world is flat, then in a nanosecond the conscious mind, the critic, will enquire of the unconscious mind if this is a factual statement. The unconscious mind checks the library and says no, the world is actually round. The conscious mind then rejects the ‘flat world’ statement, just like a sentry at a castle’s gate allowing no one to enter unless they have the necessary clearance.

So, how does hypnosis actually work? There are different techniques to induce hypnosis, but the goal is always the same. The aim is to move the unconscious mind, the critic, to one side, as it were, to allow direct access and entry to the unconscious mind. This is achieved by focusing the person’s attention inwards in a relaxed state. The more the person does this, the less consciously aware they become. The conscious mind, the critic, the sentry at the castle gate, has little or no work to do, and is moved aside.

It is at this point in the induction that information, in the form of a suggestion, is given to the person to bring about positive change. As there is no critic to evaluate the incoming data, it is uncritically accepted into the unconscious mind’s vast library. The entities or aliens seem to be able to induce this trance state in humans and then communicate with these people, these enlightened individuals, to impart knowledge into their unconscious minds with no resistance from the conscious mind, the critic. It may be that these beings can induce a trance state in their chosen humans by a different technique (or techniques), of which we, as yet, are unaware. The sensory inputs we depend upon in conscious awareness – sight, sound, touch, taste and smell –

are all diminished so that events occur in another reality altogether.

In this altered state communication is usually by telepathy and the abductees can experience astral projection and dissociation. As one might expect from an advanced race, communication on this level would not only be normal for them, but very advantageous when communicating with humans. It is the path of least resistance and it guarantees their objectives, the fulfilment of their

agenda – whatever that might be!

Most, if not all, abductees experience missing time. The passage of time displays very different properties when a person is in an altered state. After a hypnosis induction, when a person comes out of trance, they inevitably say that it seemed to have lasted only a few minutes, when, in fact, it was probably an hour-long session.

Time distortion refers to the ability of the mind to estimate, condense or expand time. Everybody has an ‘internal clock’ that is capable of making very accurate estimates regarding time. In hypnosis, the natural ability to distort time is increased through suggestion, where five minutes of experiential time can be equated with fifteen minutes of clock time. This is time contraction. For time expansion, fifteen minutes of experiential time may be just five minutes on the clock.

We know that abductees experience amnesia after their experiences, concerning the details of what has happened to them. The amnesia, which frequently occurs in trance, may be either spontaneous or induced by suggestion. It is possible that these beings cause the amnesia in the form of a post-hypnotic suggestion, which is a suggestion made during the hypnotic state, with no resistance whatsoever from the conscious mind. So, when the abductee has established full conscious awareness, they will have no recollection of their experience on this level.

Other aspects of both the trance state and the abduction phenomenon include sleep paralysis, somnambulism, dissociation and muscle rigidity. We have often come across accounts of abductees lying in bed, unable to move any part of their bodies except their eyes, as they observe small grey beings in close proximity. The same applies to when they are taken on board what they believe is a craft and are subjected to close scrutiny. Lying on a table in a brightly-lit room, they are unable to move anything – except their eyes. A chart known as the Davis-Husband scale determines muscle rigidity in hypnosis and it rates the depths of hypnotic states. Dissociation in hypnosis refers to the segregation from consciousness of certain components of mental processes, which then function independently. There have been many accounts of abductees who, while in the presence of these entities on board craft, could still see themselves sitting motionless in their car or lying in their beds.

In hypnosis, somnambulism is a state of deep relaxation. It is the third and final hypnotic state (after the light and medium states), and it is a therapist’s objective to bring about positive change through their clients being successfully induced into this state. Some individuals spontaneously become limp and highly suggestible. These people do not need deepening suggestions. A small number of people who spontaneously go into deep trance without going through the light state are referred to as somnambulistic.

The ‘Oz factor’ is an aspect of abduction and UFO phenomena often discussed by the veteran researcher Jenny Randles. External stimuli – such as traffic noise and birdsong – disappear from conscious awareness, suggesting a shift in mental state. Any concept of the passage of time is skewed. These effects on the individual who is about to be abducted, are spontaneous and immediate, as they come under the influence of these entities. The beings seem to have total control over the person’s movements, thus removing any mental power to resist complying. Are

somnambulism, dissociation and time distortion at work here?

By making these comparisons between the characteristics of trance states and the experiences of abductees, we can see very definitive similarities emerging. This may suggest that, indeed, communication between these beings and humans is on a level beyond our conscious comprehension. Do these beings induce the trance state by directly influencing the unconscious mind through telepathy, bypassing our conscious awareness in the process?
