A Dublin City Councillor who faced the Garda riot squad down during the Summer has said that large amounts of Irish people feel "disenfranchised."

Dublin West Cllr Patrick Quinlan - whose July speech in Coolock, Dublin, went viral online and is currently running in the general election- responded to the following statement from Mary Lou McDonald:

"With migrant labour I think everybody recognises that we rely in many sectors on migrant workers, it has been the issue of international protection, the fact that the system is too slow."

Mr Quinlan replied online by highlighting the high numbers of young Irish people who are forced to leave their homeland.

Mr Quinlan's speech

"The reason we rely on migrants in particular sectors is because those sectors have become so unattractive to Irish people, Mary Lou has a video on her Twitter talking to I presume, a school teacher, and he is saying 'I know 14 people', some mad figure like this, 'that emigrated,' he said.

"From his own group, imagine 14 of your mates that emigrated, you all went to college together, and emigrated.

"She was talking to someone about that and going 'we need these people for these jobs.'

"Yeah the reason we need these people for these jobs is because our own people feel so disenfranchised, unable to purchase, buy a home and secure a future for them and their family and their kids. So they leave."

Mr Quinlan is struck with shield and pepper sprayed

Cllr Quinlan became well known back in July when he referenced Padraig Pearse before being shoved and pepper sprayed by the Garda Riot Squad in Coolock.

Local people were protesting the introduction of a massive IPAS (International Protection Accommodation Service) centre in the area.

"The community asked for information about the IPAS, what were we given? Nothing," he shouted at a long line of Garda Riot Squad members, just off the Malahide Road.

"We were told nothing, it was the same in Thornton Hall. They are going to plant that. Are you going to get your shields and go there for your pay check, you are?

"You should be ashamed of yourselves. The gas part is someone like me, I have a love and a loyalty to this country, I wanted to join the Guards, I had that motivation in me, I wanted to join the Army, I had that motivation in me.

"To protect and serve. No, the batterings will continue until the plantations are complete.

"We already did it once before, the British Empire, 800 years we stood up against them in defiance.

"Forced plantations, 'genocided' from our own villages, scattered to the four corners of the earth."

Shocking incident

At that point in the confrontation, the Riot Squad ran forward and hit Mr Quinlan with their shields. He was then pepper sprayed in the face.

"It makes no difference," he replied.

"It makes no difference because in the end the truth will prevail. The Irish people have always had truth on our side.

"And as Pearse said: 'God fights with small battalions."

The entire incident was caught on camera

Meanwhile, the Government Ministers in charge of mass immigration into Ireland have repeatedly stated that the country is facing up to "international obligations" during a period of global upheaval.

However, on Friday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described open borders in his country as a planned experiment.

"What the British people are owed is an explanation," he said.

"Because a failure on this scale isn't just bad luck, it isn't a global trend or taking your eye off the ball. This is a different order of failure.

"This happened by design not accident. Policies were reformed deliberately to liberalise immigration. Brexit was used for that purpose. To turn Britain into a one nation experiment in open borders.

"Global Britain, remember that slogan? That is what they meant. A policy with no support which they then pretended wasn't happening."

Swift turn

The final moments of Cllr Quinlan's peaceful defiance of the Riot Squad saw him struck again repeatedly with a shield.

One member of the force attempts to hit him a final time, but the politician performed a swivel which left the man on the ground.
