Abductions, Altered States and a pensioner taken into a 'glowing object'

At around two p.m. on a clear, sunny Saturday afternoon, Jimmy O’Toole from Artane, north Dublin, experienced the UFO phenomenon for himself while living in Hull, northern England. Having come home from working his shift hours in a factory, he was sitting on his bed and gazing out the window when he noticed ‘a number of missiles’ darting about the sky. They moved in a deliberate, stop-start manner.

Having watched the spectacle for perhaps eight to ten minutes, he went downstairs and out to the garden for a better view. After a short time, he returned inside the house to let everyone know what he had seen. Their reaction was to jokingly refer to Irish fairy tales, as if he were crazy.

O’Toole felt embarrassed, and didn’t speak again of his experience for over forty years. The first object he saw was perhaps the size of an old two-pence coin held at arm’s length, and its surface glinted in the sun. There were half a dozen objects, maybe eight, shooting about the sky in all directions. Such sightings of multiple objects were quite rare in those days (it should be borne in mind that this incident occurred way back in 1955).

The experience that O’Toole reported to us, over four decades later, illustrates two points. The first of these is that UFO sightings, even when the object(s) remain at a considerable distance away from the witness, leave their mark on that witness. The effects of a sighting can last a lifetime.

The second point is that the negative attitude of society to UFOs over the years has meant that another group of people has been even more reluctant to come forward to tell of their experiences. The language of ufology has now embraced the word ‘experiencer’ for these people. It’s an umbrella term for those who claim to have been abducted by aliens – whatever ‘aliens’ actually are or from wherever they originate – or who have experienced more positive contact episodes with various entities, or experienced missing time, etc.

What is going on? Will we ever know for sure? Many people have come forward over the years to contact UFO researchers in connection with bizarre events that have suddenly begun to intrude upon their lives. Can all of their experiences be explained in purely psychological terms, or might an external force, an outside intelligence, be responsible?

In regard to UFOs and their occupants we have often been asked, when being interviewed by the media, who ‘they’ are, where they come from, and why are they here. As of yet there is no definitive answer, but while humanity continues to explore outer space, we should also continue to explore inner space, with just as much interest and vigour. So, as well as asking who they are, we should also be asking ‘who are we?’

As we continue to search for answers as to who they are, we may also find out who we are, because there is a connection. As we humans begin to understand ourselves with more clarity our communication will become more effective, and if in the future they and we meet on a level of consciousness we both share, then we will be able to communicate. Truly communicate. There is a mystery that surrounds who they are, but there is also a mystery that surrounds who we are.

When man set foot on the moon, man was an alien on another world. When we eventually set foot on Mars, we will be extraterrestrials landing on another planet. So, we are also doing what they are doing. The only difference is that they are further along the pathway of discovery than we are. We see them as being different to us, but how different are they really? If they come from somewhere out there in the universe, we have the same origin – we all came out of the Big Bang.

Another question we are often asked is an old chestnut at this stage: why don’t they land on the White House lawn and make themselves known? Would this not alter the balance of power on Earth? Would this not affect the authority of our institutions? If communication was made gradually, through the medium of enlightened individuals around the globe, so that at some point in the future the information could be made available to the population as a whole, would this not serve the purpose better?

Jesus Christ had the same idea when He communicated knowledge to enlightened individuals – the twelve apostles – and this communication of knowledge spread throughout the world.

Aliens may have absolutely no intention of communicating with governments, but as we already know from accounts around the world, they are apparently making contact with individuals. We are all well aware at this stage of the abduction phenomenon. Will these people, these abductees, be the ‘enlightened individuals’ whose role it may be to spread the knowledge of these beings’ agenda?

Is it possible that some abductees could be ‘sleepers’ who have received information, advanced knowledge or extrasensory abilities, and have stored this information on an altered level of consciousness of which they are not yet aware? Such a level of consciousness could be used as a bridge to communication, if and when mass awareness is instigated. It makes better sense than landing on the White House lawn.

This process of communication from these beings with humans at an individual level is ongoing. They do have an agenda. What this agenda is, we will only know when they are ready to let us know, and when this happens nothing will ever be the same again.

It may be that certain individuals are being ‘chosen’ by them to fulfil their agenda. Perhaps some of these individuals have been experiencing profound communication from a very early age. Is it possible that the memory of medical experiments conducted upon them is a cover (or part-cover) for the actual ‘data-feed’ that is being undertaken on these experiencers?

Abductees often feel a familiar attachment to their abductors. One abductee said: ‘I feel that there is something personal about the experience, the abductors who intrude upon my life are familiar strangers … it is part of us (mankind).’

When we consider communication between us and beings that are more advanced than we are, we must appreciate that their form of communication will be at a more advanced level also. We know that these beings communicate with abductees by telepathic means, rather than by the spoken word, in most of the abductions.

There are many cases where abductees experience dissociation or astral projection. Astral projection is the ability to place one’s awareness out of one’s physical body. A family under hypnosis after an alleged abduction said that their car was taken on board a craft. They then experienced an out-of-body awareness, where they floated around the interior of the craft, still aware of their bodies sitting in the car.

In another case, a man lying in bed was shown images in his mind of two strange figures. The two figures beckoned him to go with them. All of a sudden he found himself floating out of his bed and along a beam of light and into a craft. As he was inside the object, conversing with the two beings, his wife, who had been with him in the bedroom, could still see him lying on the bed.

In yet another case, Michael McCabe, an elderly man from Meigh, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland, was driving home one evening when he was abducted from his car into a glowing object. From this environment, he could still see his body sitting motionless and lifeless in the driving seat of his car.

At the time when an abduction is taking place, the individual usually experiences a phenomenon known as the ‘Oz factor’, a term popularised by researcher Jenny Randles. This state is characterised by the absence of natural sounds, like birds singing, traffic, etc. Sensory inputs diminish, which seems to imply that the events which follow occur in another reality altogether.

The late Dr. John Mack, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, speaking on the abduction phenomenon, said: ‘such reports, I believe, raise profound questions about how we experience the world around us, and about the very nature of that world.’ Dr. Mack’s experiential work with transpersonal psychology introduced him to a wider notion of reality which allows for experiences that don’t fit our normal understanding. He explained that the phenomenon, whatever its source, raises many questions about our place and role in the cosmos.

When an abductee has this extraordinary experience and attempts to express it in terms of the five senses, it proves to be very difficult, if not impossible. On the other hand, a person listening to the account of the event may become frustrated at not being able to comprehend the communication. It takes at least two people to communicate, a sender and a receiver, and it is the responsibility of the sender to ensure that what the listener receives is what has been communicated. In the case of an abduction it is almost impossible for the sender to do this, and so the receiver, the person listening to the abductee’s account of their experience, will receive a communication outside the normal field of his or her understanding and may dismiss the abductee as irrational. We need a new set of tools, a new approach, to help us to explain this ever-increasing and ever-perplexing intrusion into our reality.

Continuous serious study of the abduction enigma could lead us to a greater knowledge involving the psychic aspects of the phenomenon and the various dimensions to it. It will allow us entry into unseen realities that are presently obscured by our rigid scientific approaches. We need to push away the parameters of our too- limited approach, and grab the opportunity to learn and grow.

In the next part of this article, we will discuss reported personal experiences of

missing time in Ireland.
